Please accept our appologies, a nameserver failure this morning caused some sites/services to be inaccessible while we installed and restored the data to a replacement which has affected some customers from 10:30 to 14:00 06/January/2009
DNS works by trying one of the nameservers associated to a domain based on local ISP rules - normally one of
* first in list
* round-robin (each one alternately)
* closest IP
etc
However if they'd tried IP-1 they would have received (and cached) a "servfail" result stopping the domain being found.
We have updated the zone file serial numbers on all DNS records to inform all requests that the dns entries have been updated and that the isp caches should collect a new and correct version.
