View Full Version : Two pretty substantial problems

Okay, first I couldn't log into my cPanel. I figured, no big deal, I probably just changed the password and forgot what the new one is. So I applied to have it changed, then I was able to log in using the new one. After updating my site -- changing the home page, among other things -- I logged out and checked the site itself to see if the changes were made. They weren't.

Well it's been almost two weeks and the changes I made still haven't affected the actual site. What's more, I once again cannot log in. I could keep applying for password changes till I turn blue, but I suspect there's a deeper underlying problem. I'm just asking that something be done to make it work again.

My site is Podunk U (http://www.podunku.host-dot.com) , by the way.

Hello,

Does anyone else have access to your account who could have changed the password? The system wouldn't just randomly change your password. Also, please note that passwords are case sensitive so check that you are not typing it in with Caps Lock on.

What method were you using to make the changes? Did you upload the changes into your public_html directory? The system doesn't keep any old pages, it serves the pages straight from your public_html folder.

The latest peice of news on your site is as follows.

June 16, 2005: False alarm, everyone. Apparently my host was willing to upgrade me to "VIP service," meaning they're still going to host my site for free until... well, until they change their minds I guess. :^)

Is this correct? Have you made any more changes to your site since this item of news was posted?

I have indeed. And when I logged back into cPanel (after applying for another password change), it showed the rewritten and newly uploaded files as being right where I'd put them, in the "www" folder. Which was why I was surprised that they weren't part of the viewable site.

Nobody else has my password; that's what worries me. And nobody else seems to have reported a problem like this, so I guess it can't be hackers either. All I know is, I apply for a new password, I use it and I can log in fine, I change my password because I'd been told to, then when I try to log in the next time, neither the new password nor the one I'd been given in the email work.

Can you PM me to request a change of password? Then once you have logged in with your new password try uploading any new files into "public_html" instead of "www". They should both work as "www" is linked to "public_html". It is worth a try though. :)

I have replied to your PM with a new password. If you are uploading files using cPanel's File Manager, please remember to tick the "Overwrite existing files" box.

Seems to work almost perfectly now -- only hitch is, it still displays the old home page version when I omit the "/index.html" from the address, which is how most people have it bookmarked. Any way this can be fixed?

(me happening to be on a different computer than before) Ah. I got it. Cool.

Oh, and it seems to remember my password fine now. Thank you both. :)
